An extensive industrial zone situated on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with radioactive pollution following an official team detected presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the site, that encompasses businesses that export chilled marine products.

Probe and Discovery of Pollution

The country's authorities initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a shipment of chilled coated shrimp exported by an Indonesian company.

Officials released an advisory instructing suppliers and sellers to discard the product and avoid selling it, although the detected amount was well under the agency's action limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an immediate risk to the public.

The authority explained: “The main impact on health of concern following longer term, ongoing small amount contact (eg through eating of contaminated food or liquid over time) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two factories in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one additional production sites, but confirmed they would promptly receive cleanup procedures carried out by the country's nuclear agency.

The environment minister declared that people residing in highly polluted areas would be relocated until the location was cleaned, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical authorities also performed examinations on nearby employees and residents living close to the manufacturing zone, finding nine individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were sent to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures

The affected locations will right away undergo decontamination operations by the national atomic energy institute. Officials have further selected the area of a scrap metal factory as an isolation center for polluted materials.
