The Reds Vows Not to Alter Offensive Approach Despite Current Struggles, Says Head Coach Slot
Liverpool's head coach has announced that the club's hierarchy share his views regarding the recent downturn and he has no intention of discarding their attacking style in pursuit of a turnaround. The tactician acknowledged that six unsuccessful results in seven games was below standard ahead of Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Increasing Scrutiny Amid Difficult Period
Slot accepted the pressure was on before his rotated squad were eliminated from the Carabao Cup against the London club. However, he insisted that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the club's ownership or management structure following a significant spending of almost £450m.
"Our views align," commented the Liverpool boss, whose squad will encounter Real Madrid in the European competition and play against Manchester City in the Premier League.
Player Depth Stays Unquestioned
The coach is convinced his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are completely available and completely set for the programme we are facing". He mentioned that the recent signings in players such as the German international and the forward, who is likely to miss out again against Aston Villa through injury, had left the club "in an excellent position for the short-term future and the years to come".
Integration Challenges
When questioned about why his team were struggling to integrate, he responded: "That's not particularly helpful. 'What's causing this?' I give an explanation and people say I'm coming up with excuses. I can identify five or six reasons why we are struggling for victories or experiencing losses as we do but, as I consistently state, there are insufficient justifications to have a run of form as we had now."
- Regardless of whether I could come up with multiple factors
- As Liverpool manager you must avoid losses
- The reality is six defeats in seven games
Defensive Statistics
Only the Clarets (twenty-one) have allowed more significant openings from normal situations this season than Liverpool (nineteen). The first-place team, the North London club, have conceded only two. Yet Liverpool's coach rejects the defense has been too vulnerable and asserts there is no justification to abandon offensive philosophy for a more pragmatic style after 10 games without a clean sheet.
"I don't see us conceding a lot of chances so I find no basis to change our playing style completely but we have to enhance in not conceding goals," he declared.
Recent Examples
"Versus the Red Devils, how many chances did we concede? When playing Frankfurt when we were 3-1 up, we barely allowed a shot on target. In every match we have played so far we haven't allowed a many opportunities. Absolutely not. We do allow a slightly more than last season but that has to do with us being 1-0 down so you become more adventurous. But overall I don't feel that our challenge is that we concede too many chances. Our issue is we don't score the opportunities we generate."
